This is the third volume from ESP Disk documenting the free-jazz trumpeter Don Cherry's celebrated 1996 gig at the Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen. Having just recorded his first LP for Blue Note, COMPLETE COMMUNION, Cherry brought along tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri from that date as well as adding the up-and-coming German vibraphonist Karl Berger to expand to a quintet. "Complete Communion" itself is reprised on this date--VOL. 2 offers yet another version--and the presence of Berger's intricate vibes tempers the gritty, wide-open interplay between Cherry and Barbieri. Bassist Bo Stieff and drummer Aldo Romano more than hold their own with the free-jazz masters.
