Performer Notes
  • One of the most remarkable compilations in recent memory, Buried Country: The Story of Aboriginal Country Music examines the contributions of aboriginal Australians to the field of country music. A soundtrack to a documentary of the same name, Buried Country is a two-disc set that covers the late '50s through the '90s and a myriad of country music styles. Some of the artists, such as Jimmy Little and Lionel Rose, will be familiar to Australian listeners, but many of the others are very obscure. The most fascinating and moving songs describe the aboriginal experiences of having babies and land seized by the white government, as heard in Bob Randall's "Brown Skin Baby" and the Country Outcasts' "Jackie Jackie," the latter of which mixes English lyrics with a chorus sung in an indigenous language. Jim Ridgeway's "Ticket to Nowhere" and Vic Simms' "Get Back into the Shadows" address the broader issue of racism, while Auriel Andrew's "Truck Driving Woman" fits firmly within the mainstream country tradition. It would appear that country music made its way to Australia without the racist connotations that exist in the United States, which enabled aboriginal Australians to embrace it on the basis of its folk simplicity and rural orientation. The result is truly a wonder: A powerfully expressive and sometimes activist minority music from the other side of the world that just happens to sound a lot like American country music. ~ Greg Adams
