This Doris Day collection courtesy of TCM and Warner Bros releases several of Day's films that were hitherto unavailable on DVD. It's A Great Feeling - a nifty little spoof on the phenomenom of being starstruck. Day stars as a canteen lady on the studio lot who has more grandiose plans for herself. She somehow hijacks the directorial debut of Jack Carson who promotes her to the leading lady of his film, as the two of them along with Harry Morgan go through the ins and outs of making a film. The film features a range of stars in cameos such as Joan Crawford, Edward G Robinson and Danny Kaye. Part of the fun is spotting them out. Tea for Two - this is a nice period musical based on the Broadway production No No Nanette. The film itself is a musical within a musical as Doris Day and friends set up rehearsals in her home for a new production. Gordon MacRae stars as her lover (they'd be paired several more times in the early 50s). There's some nice tunes in here including the title song and the general feel of the film is of lightweight entertainment. April in Paris - Day stars as a performer who mistakenly receives an invitation from the State Department to represent American Theatre in Paris. It is up to Ray Bolger to rectify the mistake he made, but he ends up falling in love with Day instead. The film is breezy and Day looks rather lovely in it. The Tunnel of Love - Day and Widmark star as a married couple. She wants a baby a.s.a.p and he isn't so fussed, which causes some arguments between them. They then agree upon adoption, but they initially struggle to make a good impression on the agency. It is an interesting premise that retains relevancy today, but the execution falls a little short - balancing comedy and social commentary can sometimes be a delicate balance as one tries to dominate the other. Nonetheless it is interesting to catch Doris Day and Richard Widmark in their only film together. Starlift - Back in the 40s, each of the main Hollywood Studios assembled all their top stars in a Hollywood Canteen-esque variety film for the WW2 troops. The 1951 film Starlift is somewhat of a homage to the earlier films with some of Warner Bros up-and-comers (such as Doris Day, Gordon MacRae, Virginia Mayo and Gene Nelson) playing themselves. The main plot concerns two Air Force men trying to meet a famous actress. It is well worth watching to see some movie stars as themselves.
