John Lithgow stars in this drama as Kendall Laird, an army major returning the body of a young black soldier killed in Vietnam to his home town. Coming up against the prejudice of the deep south however, Laird is informed that the cemetary is for whites only, and he must convince the population that the dead soldier was a hero, deserving of better treatment. It is only when Laird digs deeper into the circumstances of the soldier's death that he uncovers what really happened, finding evidence of a culture of fear, racism and murder in the dying days of America's involvement in Vietnam.
