Gregory Peck stars as Jimmy Ringo, one of the fastest draws in the West but desperately sick of killing and lonely traveling. This gripping tale surrounds Ringos efforts to build a new life, creating a powerful drama instead of the standard shoot-em-up--the only gunfights in THE GUNFIGHTER are those that open and close the film. Throughout encounters with old friends, new enemies, his estranged wife, and his first meeting with his only child, Peck offers an intricate portrait of a man harboring deep regrets about his own past. Arthur Millers black-and-white photography is excellent, and director Henry King deserves a heap of credit for creating a masterpiece that drops the typical Hollywood clichs in favor of a quiet, suspense-driven drama. Elements of THE GUNFIGHTER have been duplicated many times since its release, but the fine-tuning of the original prevents the pretenders from marring its appeal.
A famed gunfighter seeking peace and quiet visits his estranged wife and their small son. The sheriff, who is an old friend, warns the gunfighter that his presence is upsetting the town and it would be best if he moves on. But before he can, challengers seeking to make their own reputations come after him. Academy Award Nominations: Best Motion Picture Story.

In most of his films, Gregory Peck appears to be playing the a reserved character whose behavior is atypical to those around him which manages to garner him unwelcome attention. Here in "The Gunfighter", he plays Jimmie Ringo - a tribute to the Johnny Ringo character, perhaps? - a dead-hand gunslinger with 15 kills to his credit (or discredit, whichever way you look at it), who wishes to put the past behind him and to be left alone and start a life anew in peaceful obscurity, but is hounded everywhere by would-be wannabe Billy the Kids who are vying for the "honor" and "distinction" of having shot him. Reminds me of the movie "The Shootist" starring John Wayne, which has basically an identical plot. Ringo is an outlaw who is supposed to be feared by the general public, yet one can't help but take sides with him and empathize with his situation. Serendipity takes him to a town where the Marshal turns out to be his ex-compatriot in crime and the bartender knows him from elsewhere but feels nothing but admiration for his past exploits and both do everything they can to help him, much to the dismay and annoyance of the townspeople especially the Ladies Committee made up of self-righteous biddies. I understand that this movie did not do too well at the box office but great films are not necessarily big money-earners, and vice-versa. This is one Western which is, like the roles Gregory Peck plays in films of such genre, is atypical in that the emphasis is more on the study of central character and his inner self rather than his deeds. The only flaw I found was the lack of a proper movie score especially for some of the more tense scenes like the confrontation with the 3 cowboys, which would have highlighted the moments. Otherwise, a great film in my opinion

Great old classic western made in 1950 and starring Gregory Peck as Jimmy Ringo, an aging gunfighter who is growing weary of his life of violence... he visits town to see his wife and kid (who live under another name)... he pines for the quiet life, but everybody wants to take him on wherever he goes... fantastic acting and a tense and moving story...

Stripped back and brooding western about a notorious gunfighter called Jimmy Ringo, trapped by his reputation as the fast gun alive, who rides into a small town to visit his estranged wife. He has a couple of hours headstart on some pissed off brothers of a man he killed, but once in town his reputation has people alternatively cowering or pushing to see how far they can go.
