Arthur Schopenhauer's The Two Fundamental Problems of Ethics (1841) consists of two groundbreaking essays: 'On the Freedom of the Will' and 'On the Basis of Morals'. Christopher Janaway is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southampton. His many publications include Schopenhauer: A Very Short Introduction (2002) and he is editor of The Cambridge Companion to Schopenhauer (1999).
