Ultrasonic irradiation and the associated sonochemical and sonophysical effects are complementary techniques for driving more efficient chemical reactions and yields. Sonochemistry--the chemical effects and applications of ultrasonic waves--and sustainable (green) chemistry both aim to use less hazardous chemicals and solvents, reduce energy consumption, and increase product selectivity. A comprehensive collection of knowledge, Handbook on Applications of Ultrasound covers the most relevant aspects linked to and linking green chemistry practices to environmental sustainability through the uses and applications of ultrasound-mediated and ultrasound-assisted biological, biochemical, chemical, and physical processes.
Chapters are presented in the areas of: Medical applications Drug and gene delivery Nanotechnology Food technology Synthetic applications and organic chemistry Anaerobic digestion Environmental contaminants degradation Polymer chemistry Industrial syntheses and processes Reactor design Electrochemical systems Combined ultrasoundae'microwave technologies While the concepts of sonochemistry have been known for more than 80 years, in-depth understanding of this phenomenon continues to evolve. Through a review of the current status of chemical and physical science and engineering in developing more environmentally-friendly and less toxic synthetic processes, this book highlights many existing applications and enormous potential of ultrasound technology to upgrade present industrial, agricultural, and environmental processes.

About the Author

Dr. Dong Chen has been doing fundamental research in sonochemistry, environmental chemistry, and water and wastewater treatment technologies. States. He serves as a principal and coprincipal investigator of several funded scientific research projects. Before this position, he worked as a visiting assistant professor at Lamar University, Texas. Even earlier, Dr. Chen was an instructor and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of New Mexico and worked on a couple of research projects sponsored by national laboratories. He received his PhD in civil (environmental) engineering with a minor in geological science from The Ohio State University, Columbus, in 2005. In addition, he received his master's and bachelor's degree in environmental engineering from Nanyang Technological University and Tongji University, respectively. Besides his research experience, Dr. Chen had been working as a full-time engineering consultant for more than two years. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Ohio. Prof. (Dr.) Sanjay K. Sharma is serving as a professor in the Department of Chemistry in IET and is teaching engineering chemistry and environmental engineering courses to BTech students, and biochemistry and environmental science to postgraduate students. Dr. Sharma has delivered many guest lectures on different topics of applied chemistry in various reputed institutions. researcher. He is also serving as editor in chief for three international research journals, RASAYAN Journal of Chemistry; the International Journal of Chemical, Environmental and Pharmaceutical Research; and the International Journal of Water Treatment and Green Chemistry, and is a reviewer for many other international journals, including the prestigious Green Chemistry Letters and Reviews. He has also recently published an edited book Green Chemistry for Environmental Sustainability on sustainability series (publisher: CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC, Boca Raton, Florida). Ackmez Mudhoo obtained his BEng (Hons) in chemical and environmental engineering from the University of Mauritius in 2004. He then received his MPhil from the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, University of Mauritius, in 2007. His research interests encompass the bioremediation of solid wastes and wastewaters by composting, anaerobic digestion, phytoremediation, and biosorption. Aside from research, has professional experience as consultant chemical process engineer for China International Water & Electric Corp. (CWE, Mauritius) from February 2006 to March 2008.
