Joyce Carol Oates is a leading American writer. She's also one of the most prolific writers in the world. In this book about writing she speaks about her inspiration, the writing process and her teaching. It's a must read for all aspiring writers and JCO fans. Unlike a lot of "how to" guides out there for writers, JCO is a critically successful author who has sold books. Buy this book. You won't regret it.

Most inspiring, pure poetry. Joyce Carol Oates talks about all those things which writers (be they fiction, non-fiction or even thesis writers!) fear and love and have to encounter at some point in their lives. She talks about human nature, inspiration, failure, reading and a favourite with me: running & writing. Here is a quote about that: “Dreams may be temporary flights of madness that, by some law of neurophysiology unclear to us, keep us from actual madness, so too the twin acitvities of running/writing keep the writer reasonably sane, and with the hope, however illusory and temporary, of control” [p. 36]
