Dr Brian Hayden is an author and archaeologist who has conducted research on four continents. His passion is to understand what cultures were like in the past -- especially hunting and gathering cultures -- and why they have changed. He obtained a Certificate of Prehistory at the University of Bordeaux and he studied stone-tool making with Australian Aborigines. His doctoral degree is in Archaeology from the University of Toronto. For 30 years, he worked with native groups in the interior of British Columbia recording their traditional uses of food resources and excavating an amazing prehistoric winter village at Keatley Creek. Now a Professor Emeritus of Archaeology at Simon Fraser University and Honorary Research Associate of the Anthropology Department at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Brian Hayden has published numerous professional journal articles and books, including works on the Old Stone Age in France and a landmark synthesis of prehistoric religion. His research has been recognized by his induction into the Royal Society of Canada. Originally born in New York, Dr. Hayden now lives on Cortes Island, in coastal British Columbia.
"Hayden demonstrates a novelist's ability to capture human
experiences of friendship, rivalry, love and survival in this vivid
coming of age story...To combine them all with archaeology so
successfully is remarkable. I highly recommend this novel not only
to the young reader, but to anyone interested in historical
fiction." - Timothy Earle, Author of The Evolution of Human
Societies, Professor Emeritus at Northwestern University
"I couldn't put it down and neither could my daughter. The Eyes of
the Leopard is a triumph of historical fiction, bringing to life a
time rarely written about, with the detail and nuance only an
archaeologist of Brian Hayden's calibre could provide. Don't miss
this read. Share it with every schoolteacher, child and amateur
archaeologist in your life. They will thank you for it." - Manda
Aufochs Gillespie, author of the Green Mama book series. Founder of
Folk University and passionate YA Book Club Leader.
Archaeologists are generally timid about straying from conventional
scholarship into the potentially treacherous paths of storytelling,
but Hayden seamlessly breathes humanity into the world of the last
ice age. This book will be enjoyed by anyone who is keen to
discover an imaginary-but by no means unimaginable-hunter-gatherer
past. - Luc Moreau, Archaeologist, Editor of Social Inequality
Before Farming?, University of Cambridge
"Through the eyes of a young hero, Brian Hayden shows us the life
of the great hunters of the Paleolithic that he knows so well. The
style and the words exchanged have the vivacity of a graphic novel.
. . . We travel to the heart of an imaginary country, but . . .
they are places of adventure which are the most exceptional
habitats and decorated caves that archaeological science has
revealed to the world in the last century and a half. . . . This
saga is therefore also a breathtakingly realistic story that
compels admiration. This story goes far beyond Brian Hayden's
scientific writings; it anchors them in the passion that our
society has for the sciences of ancient times." - Jean-Michel,
Geneste Former Chief of Scientific Studies for Chauvet Cave. Former
Chief Curator of Lascaux Cave for over twenty years. Former
Director of the National Centre of Prehistory. Honorary General
Curator of French heritage.
"I was fascinated by this coming-of-age story. The writing flows
easily from chapter to chapter, with a narrative that can easily
appeal to readers of all ages. The design of the book and its
typography were a perfect fit. The artwork by Eric Carlson adds
beautiful visual support to the narrative." - Robert MacNevin,
Senior Drafting Technician, Book Designer, Layout Artist,
Musician
"My son Nicholas finished it, devoured it really, and then reread
it." - Jack Hayes, Parent
"My boys were captivated by the first chapter, begging for more as
I read it aloud. The Eyes of the Leopard was a great family read
for us to enjoy together. I imagine this unique story will be read
again by my boys on their own as it delighted their imaginations."
- Serene Watson, Parent
