"On what slender threads do life and fortune hang." Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantes is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to unearth the treasure and use it to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. Dumas' epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s.

Historical fiction has no greater advocate than Dumas' classic 'The Count of Monte Cristo'. Set over twenty five years in a period of political and social change in France and wider Europe, Dumas guides the reader through a fascinating tale of discovery, intrigue and revenge. The enormity of the plot is immense, with dozens of interweaving narratives and themes culminating in an unforgettable adventure. The characters are wonderfully portrayed; particularly Edmond Dantes, as we follow his life from happiness to despair to purpose and elation. This novel is a serious read at over 1200 words, but if you put in the effort you'll discover a tale that has been inspiring artists and writers for generations. Finally, the translation by Robin Buss is excellent and conveys the magic of the original French for English readers. I highly recommend this book.

I recently read this book and enjoyed it so much that I would rate it as one of the top 10 stories I have ever read. It is a essentially a tale of retribution with a huge cast of characters whose stories are cleverly intertwined. I watched the movie after reading the book and was quite unimpressed. The book is a million times better!!

A wrongly accused good man looses his gal and is locked up for years, he goes through hell, when he finally escapes he sets out to bring wreak havoc and ruin the lives of those who wronged him. This, of course, does not come without a price, but he is exacted on revenge, lots of action and swordplay. Sad bits, fun bits, action, and all round good story. Lovely cover and illustration
