The Author: E.N. Peterson served in the infantry in Europe during World War II, and with Military Intelligence until 1947. He returned to finish his studies, obtaining his Ph.D. at Wisconsin by 1953. He has since taught World War II history at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. His awards include Alexander von Humboldt, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Social Science Research Council. Dr. Peterson has published Hjalmar Schacht, For and Against Hitler; The Limits of Hitler's Power; The American Occupation of Germany: Retreat to Victory; and Germany in 1945: The Many Faces of Defeat (Lang, 1991).
