When a catastrophic event happens, your life changes in an instant. It may take some time for you to arrive in your new reality. Your life can take on a surreal quality. You may be in shock; you may feel like you are living in a haze, everything around you seems distorted. You may be unable to concentrate on anything; everything may be hyper clear, or moving in slow motion. Your thoughts can explode in a millions directions. There is a fracture in your life. You don't know how you are going to fix the fracture. You want to fix it, and you remember yet again that nothing will ever be the same again. It is the space between the way things were yesterday and the land you are forced to move to without wanting to move there. The suddenness of this fracture may mean that it will take some time for you to catch up with all the changes, both energetically and physically.

I didn't know it at the time-I certainly didn't know it on that day- but the loss of somebody that you love, and living with that loss, is exactly like crossing the border to a new, unfamiliar country. The language is nebulous and the ground unrecognizable. My grief journey was an invitation to live in a new country, one to which I had never wanted to move. The land I left behind is different than the land that I was forced to enter. On that day, as I was transported to the hospital, I crossed from one county to another. I didn't know I was living a metaphor; it was just a day unfolding like any other. You may be in the midst of crossing that border right now. If you are, I hope this book will be useful to you as you become acquainted with your new landscape.

One of the best ways to use this book is to buy a journal, and to let it keep you company as you read. At the end of each chapter there will be a list of things to try and questions for you to answer. Your journal is a place where you can record your thoughts and track your progress. It can be your companion on your own unique journey.

Nancy Loeffler is the founder of Being With Grief. As a mother who lost her 17-year old daughter Leah in a car accident in November of 2000, she fully understands the territory of grief. Her daughter's death provided a doorway to her transformation that she never expected. It broke open her heart and showed her a way to break free from limiting beliefs about what was possible in her life. She walks with her clients on their own grief journeys so they too can find meaning, purpose and even joy again after a devastating loss. She speaks often about her journey and is passionate about changing the conversation around grief. She embodies her message and is often found sitting in Samyama, walking in nature, collaging or taking a dance break. Learn more about Nancy at her website www.beingwithgrief.com.

Reviews

In The Alchemy of Grief, Nancy Loeffler shares her heart-wrenching and ultimately empowering journey through the wild territory of loss. Like a true alchemist, she has transformed the nuggets of wisdom gained from her experiences into practical tools that can help anyone who's coping with grief to find their way home. This is a beautiful and heartfelt book. -Marc David & Emily Rosen, Institute for the Psychology of Eating For the purpose of supporting and guiding others through grief, Nancy Loeffler is willing to share an intimate insight into her raw pain after the tragic death of her teenage daughter. In The Alchemy of Grief, she sensitively takes the reader through her painful experience and her resulting, and deliberate, growth. Nancy offers practical guidance, with specific actions, for those who are numbed and paralyzed by grief. This book will guide those working to understand and support the process and prepare each of us for the inevitable grieving we will all experience. -Ella Sciarra, Bereavement Minister You are such a Blessing to those grieving, who have a difficult journey ahead of them, by letting them know they can find more Love, Grace, and Peace in the process, by understanding, and exploring their hearts and emotions further. Your book, The Alchemy of Grief will profoundly touch the lives of many, who need to hear your heartfelt message, in knowing they can heal, and feel whole inside again, especially when there is self-doubt, guilt, anger or denial present after such a devastating loss. You've traveled a road less traveled that wasn't easy, and did it with such loving awareness, reflection, fierceness, compassion and understanding! I loved how your notes at the end of each chapter allowed for further reflection, check-ins, guidance, encouragement, and practical steps to help overcome, and integrate the grieving process into one's life daily, monthly, yearly. This is so critical to rebuilding lives, and creating new traditions around milestones reached that honor the remembrance of the person who has passed. I loved that you shared how emotions can be expressed naturally in a healthy, beautiful way, empowering the person who is grieving. This gives new meaning to living our Life to the fullest in each moment, and being present and grateful for our Life. Perhaps, as mentioned, these are some of the greatest gifts we can receive in moving through this soul-filled grieving process. -Dr. Jan Lei Iwata, www.drjanleiiwata.com
